GolfDistance Pro | Even at the same head speed, some shots fly farther than others. An iPhone/iPad app for testing launch angle, spin rate, and elevation change in 3D

The results from this simulator are reference values only. Actual distance and trajectory vary significantly based on the club, ball, impact point, weather conditions, course environment, and other factors.

How to Calculate Golf Distance — The Relationship Between Head Speed, Spin, and Smash Factor

The Basic Formula for Calculating Distance from Head Speed

A well-known shortcut for estimating golf distance is the formula "head speed (m/s) × 5.5 ≈ driver distance (yd)." For example, a 40 m/s head speed gives roughly 220 yd, and 45 m/s gives roughly 248 yd.

However, this simple formula assumes a smash factor of 1.45–1.50, and actual distance varies significantly based on smash factor, launch angle, spin rate, and wind. This tool lets you input all of these parameters for a more precise distance calculation powered by a physics engine.

Driver Distance Reference Table by Head Speed

The table below shows estimated driver distances assuming a smash factor of 1.45, launch angle of 15°, and spin rate of 2,500 rpm. Find the row closest to your own head speed.

How Spin Rate Affects Distance

Spin rate (backspin) on a driver shot is a major factor affecting distance. Too much spin causes the ball to balloon, increasing air resistance and reducing carry. Too little spin causes the ball to drop from insufficient lift, which also limits distance.

Move the spin rate slider in this tool to see, in real time, how different spin rates affect trajectory height and carry.

Wind Speed: Effects and Calculation

A headwind significantly reduces distance, while a tailwind extends it. As a general guide, each 1 m/s of headwind costs roughly 5–7 yd, and each 1 m/s of tailwind adds roughly 3–5 yd. This tool calculates the wind effect across a range of −7 m/s (headwind) to +7 m/s (tailwind).

Want to Calculate Iron Distance?

If you want to calculate distance for middle irons through wedges, use the Middle Iron Distance Calculator. It supports head speeds of 15–45 m/s and spin rates of 3,000–10,000 rpm, letting you simulate the high-spin trajectories typical of irons.

How This Tool Calculates Distance

This simulator uses a 2D trajectory engine that accounts for air drag and the Magnus effect (lift generated by spin). Specifically, it assumes a ball diameter of 42.67mm and a mass of 45.93g, and in an air density of 1.2 kg/m³, it calculates drag and lift coefficients based on Reynolds number at each step, numerically integrating over small time increments. Bounce and roll after landing are also calculated using a coefficient-of-restitution model to determine total distance.
