Iron Distance Calculator — Head Speed, Spin Rate, and Club-by-Club Estimates

Estimated Carry Distance by Club

Below are estimated iron distances by head speed. Smash factor is assumed at a standard value for each club, with spin rate at an ideal value.

The Relationship Between Spin Rate and Distance

Unlike with a driver, a moderate amount of backspin is essential for irons to stop the ball on the green. However, excessive spin causes significant carry loss and makes the shot more vulnerable to wind due to what's known as "ballooning."

Adjust the spin rate slider (3,000–10,000 rpm) in this tool to see the effect on trajectory height and carry distance in real time. If you know your actual spin rate from a TrackMan or GC Quad, enter that value and compare it against your real-world carry distance.
